Chapter 2

The knight and the pregnant damsel make their
precarious way away from the place of her captivity, along a narrow winding
track against the rock face above a fathomless gorge. Myriad bats flap in
the gloom above, amid the jagged stalactites. |

Another Garger skulks in the shadows at the far
side of the narrow bridge over the yawning gulf, barring their one way out
of the underworld. The fiend bears the scars of past battles. In its one
remaining eye is a savage glint, and in one of its clawlike hands is a brutal
blade. It makes a low, snarling sound, as though already aware what had
become of the other one of its kind- perhaps its brother. The girl shrinks
back, as the knight advances, closing his visor and drawing his own sword...

The beastling jumps at the knight with a dreadful,
screeching cry, and the damsel's heart thumps within her as she looks on...

The duel commences. Their blades clash and the
ringing reverberates around the cavern.

Their blades ring together, striking with furious
force, then suddenly- whiplash- the garger's powerful tail flicks around,
knocking the knight's legs from under him, sending him falling... |

The garger raises his sword to strike down at
the stricken knight, hanging from the edge of the narrow bridge. Little
cascades of sand and rubble crumble from the slender formation of rock that
links the two sides of the mighty, subterranean ravine, and tumble down
and down through the empty blackness. The young woman can't bear to look.
