Andromeda

Oils, June 2010

The princess from Greek Mythology, who was chained to a rock as an offering to the sea monster the Cetus. The monster was sent by the sea god Poseidon to devastate the shore after Andromeda's mother Caseopeia boasted that her daughter was fairer than the Nereids (sea nymphs). Our hero Perseus should be on his way to rescue the maiden shortly, riding the winged horse Pegaus, but he had better hurry up!

It had been some time since I'd painted a nude, and Andromeda was a good excuse. I'd been planning to depict this particular damsel in distress anyway, when the theme came up as a 'Character of the Week (ChOW) contest on conceptar.org. I painted this in the space of a weekend to get it in on time. (It didn't win).
