Masked Nude
oil on board
Gordon Napier, January 2009
My intention in this little painting
was to evoke a mysterious and sensual mood, resulting from the affects
of candlelight on flesh, pearls and rich objects. The woman's body is
obviously revealed in the golden glow, but her face is hidden by a mask,
such as those favoured by Venetians during their decadent carnivals. The
horns hint at a wild, even devilish side, although the figure's general
air is sedate and elegantly aloof.
